Quotes and Quips from the Coach, Tom Cole
AUGUST 31, 2010
Hey Football Central Gang, there is nothing better than the start of high school and college football. The young men who play and the older men that coach do that for the pure love of the game, to be a part of team and to learn to achieve through sacrifice and hard work! Very few of the aforementioned groups are going to make a living playing or coaching the game. They play and coach because the sport, in its purest form, is very special. So, let’s get to it! In high school last week on BCSN, Whitmer came up with a big win over Tiffin Columbian. Joe Palka at Whitmer is so good at coaching the details that make all the difference in the game of football. Southview had a tremendous comeback win against a very good St. Francis team. Southview plays with the nerve of an aging old west gunfighter! With their backs to the wall, they pull off the great come back against the Knights. Central muscled Bowling Green. St. John’s was too much for Scott.
Our Toledo Rockets have a major opener against a very good Arizona team this Friday in the Glass Bowl. The University of Toledo has the most difficult schedule in the entire MAC, with Bowling Green’s a close second. For the Rockets to be able to handle this extremely tough line up they are going to have to be able to play better defense. They must be able to rush the QB, tackle better in the open field, which means tremendous pursuit to the ball. Then on the offensive side, the Rockets must establish that they will run the football. That with take pressure of off their young QB and allow their defense to get off the field. Eric Page will be a marked man this year. He is a tremendous talent, but he will draw the best coverage from every defense. The Rockets will need to put him in motion, line him up in different spots, and get him into the Wild Cat. Eric, a former BCSN star from Springfield, is going to be a college superstar!
In the NFL exhibition season do not believe anything that you see! The exhibition season in pro football means less than zero. The NFL is about one position and that is QB. If you don’t have a good one, or should I say a great one, you cannot win long term. You may sneak in a season here or there with a less than outstanding QB, but to be good as a team for the long haul you must have a Horatio Hornblower playing QB. You cannot consistently win in the NFL with an average quarterback. You need a QB that tilts the field that plays down hill. QB’s in the NFL that can’t play anymore, like Brady Quinn should quit and become an extra on one of the best TV shows ever, Mad Men on Buckeye Cable. He could be a stand in for Jon Hamm, aka Don Draper. Brady needs to get under the TV lights because he just cannot push the ball deep in the NFL. Once they figure that out, they sit on his short routes and clog the running lanes, and that is why Brady does not work in the Pro game. And when Brett finally retires after this year, he could go to a cable remake of Green Acres! He would make a perfect Mr. Hanney.
Be safe! Talk to you next week,
Tom Cole, the Coach, BCSN
